We always love to treat our dogs, even giving them left overs from our own plate. But beware, some human foods are dangerous for your dog.
Most of us know one or maybe two foods that are dangerous for your dog, but here are 8 foods to keep your dog well away from.

1. Bread Dough
FATALLY TOXIC FOR DOGS
There may be no better smell than that of bread baking in the oven. But the raw dough is dangerous to dogs.
Bread dough expands in the stomach, causing serious problems, including bloating and a twisted stomach. Also, the fermenting yeast produces gas and alcohol, causing alcohol poisoning.
Symptoms Can Include:
RETCHING
SWOLLEN STOMACH
ELEVATED HEART RATE
VOMITING
WEAKNESS/PARALYSIS
COLLAPSE
HYPOTENSION
HYPOTHERMIA
COMA
DEATH
2. Nutmeg
FATALLY TOXIC FOR DOGS
Nutmeg is more and more common, and you may have it in your spice rack, or in some of your favourite foods.
Nutmeg is highly neurotoxic to dogs, and can cause a nervous system disorder which can be fatal.
The smell is attractive to dogs.
Nutmeg may be in your spice-rack, and store-bought foods like soup, eggnog, breads, pies and more.
Symptoms Can Include:
DRY MOUTH
TREMORS
HALLUCINATIONS
INCREASED HEART RATE
DISORIENTATION
SEIZURES
DEATH
3. Hops
FATALLY TOXIC FOR DOGS
Hops, the main ingredient in beer, can be fatal to dogs.
Hops can cause malignant hyperthermia in dogs, and will usually prove fatal.
Even small amounts of the plant (and even “spent”, or used plants) can be fatal. Greyhounds are particularly sensitive to hop toxicity.
Symptoms Can Include:
ANXIETY
HIGH TEMPERATURE
INCREASED BREATHING
RAPID HEART RATE
VOMITING
CLOTTING
DEATH
4. Chocolate
FATALLY TOXIC FOR DOGS
We all love chocolate, and your dog probably would too. So make sure you keep this well away from him/her.
Chocolate is a stimulant, and contains caffeine & theobromine.
Avoid foods that contain any chocolate, including milk chocolate, and any chocolate containing food. Dark chocolate is especially potent.
Symptoms Can Include:
VOMITING
DIARRHEA
EXCESSIVE THIRST
ABNORMAL HEART RHYTHM
TREMORS
SEIZURES
DEATH
5. Macadamia Nuts
TOXIC FOR DOGS
Great for us humans, macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs.
Macadamia nuts are usually not-fatal, however they can make your dog very sick.
The reason for toxicity is not know. Signs of toxicity can show after just 2.4g of nuts per kg of body weight.
Symptoms Can Include:
HIGH TEMPERATURE
TREMORS
RAPID HEART RATE
VOMITING
WEAKNESS/PARALYSIS
LOSS OF CO-ORDINATION
6. Caffeine
FATALLY TOXIC FOR DOGS
Caffeine is a daily staple for most of us, but be careful not to let any caffeine-containing foods or drinks near your dog.
Caffeine is a stimulant. Theobromine, found in chocolate, is a cousin chemical of caffeine
Avoid foods that contain any caffeine, including spilt tea or coffee, tea bags, caffeine pills, soda and chocolate.
Symptoms Can Include:
BLEEDING
VOMITING
DIARRHEA
ELEVATED HEART RATE & ABNORMAL RHYTHM
MUSCLE TREMORS
FITS
SEIZURES
RAPID BREATHING
DEATH
7. Grapes & Raisins
FATALLY TOXIC FOR DOGS
Although the exact reason is unknown, grapes can cause kidney failure in dogs.
Even small amounts can be fatal for your dog.
Avoid foods that may contain grapes or raisins, such as left over muesli and snack bars.
Symptoms Can Include:
VOMITING
DIARRHEA
LATHARGY
QUIETNESS
FITS
BLEEDING
SEIZURES
DEATH
8. Sweeteners
TOXIC FOR DOGS
Common today, sweeteners may be harmful for dogs.
Xylitol is a 5-sugar alcohol, and may cause poisoning.
Foods may include some diet drinks, baked goods, toothpastes, gum, sweets/ candy, mouthwash and more.
Symptoms Can Include:
VOMITING
LOSS OF CO-ORDINATION
SEIZURES
LETHARGY
LIVER FAILURE
